(WMC-TV) - A 78-year-old man fights for his life at The MED after being assaulted in Glenview Park in South Memphis. Neighbors say it is time the city gets involved in fixing the community.

Residents are afraid after the 78-year-old man was beaten unconscious in the park and left there Sunday morning.

Memphis police say when they found him he had injuries consistent with assault. He was also on the ground several feet away from his belongings.

"I really believe it's a shame that you can't come to the park, kids can't come to the park without being accosted by anyone while you're just minding your own business," said Memphis resident Zandra Bunford.

Bunford is a mother who just moved to Memphis. She said she will not be bringing her children the park anymore to play.

"They just think they can do anything to anybody and get away with it," said resident Martha Smith.

Smith says the incident makes her even more concerned for the children.

"If they do it to somebody who can't defend themselves they'll do it to a child. They don't care," said Smith.

Smith says this incident actually shines a light on just how badly the City needs to fix the lights in the park.

"At night time that lights is not working because the city won't come out here and fix the lights. So ain't no telling what might go on in this park at night it is pitch black dark," said Smith.
