Dispatch operators suing City of Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Five 911 operators have filed a lawsuit against the City of Toledo in federal court asking that they and others in the AFSCME Ohio Council 8 bargaining unit be reimbursed the comp time they say they rightly deserve.

"The city has been saying because of staffing levels and operational needs, they've been denying their request," said Council 8 Regional Director Steve Kowalik.

The union says there's reason for the denial. There are 70 emergency operators but 22 unfilled positions, boosting their stressful workload.

"They're being denied the comp time because the Bell administration hasn't addressed the issue of vacancies," Kowalik said.

The lawsuit also states there's a 'lame and lazy list' of operators. Those on the list are told their chances of getting comp time are 'slim.'

"It could be a number of things," Kowalik said. "It could be because you were disciplined, took off for pregnancy leave, an illness or anything."

A spokesperson for the Bell administration would not comment on the lawsuit.
