CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

Police say a Caruthersville man is accused of stealing more than $420,000.

According to Caruthersville Police Chief Tony Jones, 32-year-old Dwight Hank Clayton, Jr. was taken into custody on Friday.

Clayton worked for Landrum Tax Services in Caruthersville.

On Friday shortly after 2:40 p.m., Caruthersville Police and Missouri Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC), arrested Clayton on a felony charge of Theft/Stealing (value of Property or Services of $25,000 or more). Clayton is accused of stealing around $426,000 from a local business.

On Oct. 28 Caruthersville Police say they were contacted by the owners of CMV in Home Health Assistance, of Caruthersville.

The Caruthersville Police Department Chief Investigator learned that the business had entered a verbal agreement with Clayton, an employee with Landrum Tax Services of Caruthersville, around June 25, 2012, to deposit employee payroll taxes into a bank account and to pay taxes quarterly with The Internal Revenue Services (IRS).

On October 23, 2013, one of the owners of CMV received a call from the IRS in reference to unpaid taxes. The owner stated he had made payments to Clayton on the 10th and 25th day of each month and none of the taxes had been paid.

Police say Clayton had paid a little over $65,000 in payroll taxes to the IRS, which left an unpaid balance around $426,000.

Information gathered from the investigation by the Caruthersville Police Department and Missouri Highway Patrol, led to Clayton being arrested on the charge of Theft and is being held in The Pemiscot County Jail, without a bond set, until an appearance in Pemiscot County Circuit Court on Nov. 4.
