LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Fire crews spent most of early Monday morning working a house fire in west Louisville.

The fire was reported just after 1:15 a.m. Monday in the Russell neighborhood. As crews responded, they discovered a roaring fire in the back of a building at 2416 W Chestnut Street.

Firefighters said it was tricky to extinguish because the home was full of items which made it hard for them to get around.

"It's a pretty large structure and there's a lot of debris and clutter on the first floor," said Lieutenant Colonel Glen Nally, Assistant Fire Chief of Louisville Fire and Rescue. "We had to call for some extra equipment to support the operation. Actually we were unable to gain access through the front but were able to come in from the second floor through the rear of the structure and extinguish the fire."

Initial 911 calls reported a person in the building but fire fighters said they did an extensive search and found no one at home. No injuries were reported by emergency crews.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
