COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

A public meeting is planned Monday in Covington to discuss funding options for a new Brent Spence Bridge.

Officials are looking for ways to cover the estimated $2.5 billion to replace the current bridge. Constructed in the late 1960s, the original design was meant to accommodate 80,000 vehicles.

Since then, traffic has more than doubled across the bridge. In addition, drivers are three to five times more likely to have an accident on the Brent Spence Bridge than any other Tri-State interstate.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. at Drees Pavilion in Devou Park. Officials are looking for idea on how a new bridge could be funded.

The project involves constructing a second bridge directly to the west of the existing Brent Spence Bridge to increase safety and relieve some traffic congestion along Interstates 71 and 75.

KYTC says the existing bridge would be renovated to improve safety, visibility and other deficiencies.

Nearly eight miles of highway – approximately five in Northern Kentucky and three in Ohio – would also be improved to accommodate the enhanced bridge.

The two-deck Brent Spence Bridge carries both interstate highways across the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington, Ky. The bridge is structurally sound but classified "functionally obsolete" because of its narrow lanes, absence of emergency shoulders and limited visibility on its lower deck.

Approximately 40 residential properties and 14 commercial buildings would be affected by construction.
