LITTLE ROCK (AHSAA.org) - Tiffany Tang, a senior at Rogers; Christian Mathis, a senior at Mountain Home and Brentlee Weaver, a senior at Valley View, have been named the Wendy's High School Players of the Year. This award is sponsored by Wendy's and is open to student-athletes playing varsity sports at Arkansas Activity Association member schools.
Coaches and school administrators were eligible to make nominations for this award during the voting period of October 21, 2013 to November 4, 2013.
Tang and Mathis were selected for tennis, while Weaver was named for volleyball.
Tang was selected as the Tennis Player of the Year in the girls division. Mathis was the top selection from the boys division.
Tang had a perfect record in high school, not losing in singles or doubles competition during her four-year tennis career. She won the Class 7A state singles titles and the Overall state singles titles in 2010 and 2011. She also won the Class 7A state doubles titles and the Overall state doubles titles in 2012 and 2013.
Tang's commanding presence lifted Rogers to three consecutive state tennis championships in 2013, 2012 and 2011.
Mathis won the Class 6A state singles title this year, and his only loss of the season came in the semifinal round of the Boys Overall Championships. During the season he dropped four games, winning 116 and was 14-0. Mathis was also undefeated in 6A East Conference play
Weaver was a member of four consecutive Class 4A state championship teams. She is an All-State selection this year and the most valuable player of the Class 4A state tournament. Weaver posted 15 aces, 40 kills, 5 blocks and 31 digs in the 4A state tournament this season. Weaver is a three time All-State selection.
Wendy's will have Player of the Year awards for the remaining sports in Girls Cross Country, Boys Cross Country, Dance, Cheer, Football, Girls Swimming, Boys Swimming, Girls Bowling, Boys Bowling, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Girls Track and Boys Track.
Each winner will receive a plaque and a medallion from Wendy's which will be presented at Wendy's Day of Champions luncheon at the Arkansas Activities Association office at the end of the athletic season.
