CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) - The police chief and town manager in Chadbourn are getting extra attention.

Town council members called a special meeting to talk about personnel matters earlier this week. WECT learned they plan to talk about them again next Tuesday.

Newly re-elected council member Donald Ray Bass requested the meeting this week. He admits, doing it the day before the election was not the best timing. But he says it was a meeting that needed to happen.

Bass said he and other council members would like to see police do more when it comes to combating crime in the small town.

Earlier this year, some people living in the area reached out to county officials after a few shootings,  because they didn't think police officers were doing enough.

Bass said he's still hearing concerns from citizens regarding the number of break-ins going on. He said even his mother's home was burglarized twice.

Bass believes police chief Steven Shaw can do a better job when it comes to being a leader.

"It's nothing that I'm scared to say because I've said it to council and to the town manager," explained Bass. "If he's not getting it there, we need to make some changes, if that's the case. It's nothing everybody isn't thinking about. I mean, I hear it from all over town. Either help me out with it or yeah we might need to replace him."

Bass says since town manager Stevie Cox is Shaw's boss, he would like to see Cox react more to how police handle crime.

According to Shaw, his department has worked with local, state, and federal agencies to crackdown on crime. He tells us, he's aware of Bass' concerns, and looks forward to hearing his ideas and working with him in the future.
