(WMC-TV) - Photos reveal City of Memphis workers who appeared to be too lazy to move brush before painting lines on the street. Some people said the job was a waste of tax dollars, but the city of Memphis said what looked like a laughable mistake was actually done with a purpose.

Crumpler Road near Valley Oak Drive was just re-striped. Most of the job is done right on the asphalt, but some dead leaves and old yard debris got a new paint job, too.

"They need to send somebody out to move the leaves. Re-paint it," said Memphian Fred Roy.

Commuters and neighbors alike emailed the Action News 5 newsroom with photos of the paint job.

Comments on Facebook included "I pay taxes and this is an absolute misuse of taxpayer dollars" and "I know there are some good workers, but as a whole it is pitiful the apathy and lazy attitudes in the Memphis city organizations."

On Thursday, a new paint job was down on the asphalt.

"We have over 750 miles of street that we stripe. We try to do that over a three year cycle," said Memphis City Engineer John Cameron. "It was done per our policy."

Cameron says road striping is done in a three-vehicle convoy that stretches nearly a thousand feet.

"Once this large convoy gets rolling, it's really safer and more efficient for it to just keep rolling. We don't want to, particularly on a busy street, to stop the convoy," he said.

Instead, there are specific instructions for handling stuff in the way.

"A note is made of that by the supervisor and we come back, follow up with a smaller crew that paints the new stripe," he said.

In other words, what looked like sheer laziness amounts to staying safe.

"They work hard during the striping season and we try to keep them safe," said Cameron.

Cameron says there was one minor error. The stream of paint can be halted and restarted so that debris can be skipped. Regardless the convoy is not supposed to stop.

Cameron says crews are being reminded of the instructions.
