TURNERS FALLS, MA (WSHM) -

State police say a person is in custody Wednesday night after a three hour long standoff on Turnpike Road in the Montague village of Turners Falls.

Montague police say that just after 8 p.m. a person living at 74 Turnpike Road called police and said his roommate was drunk and had held a 9mm handgun against his head and threatened to kill him.

The resident was able to escape and call 911.

Police negotiators were able to talk 63-year-old Mark Holland out of the home and he was peacefully taken into custody three hours later.

Montague Police Chief Charles Dodge says after a preliminary search of the home police found rounds of ammunition and a magazine.

They also say an "item" in the residence was found that alarmed police. The bomb squad has been called in to investigate that item and the rest of the house.

The roommate of the man in custody says he doesn't believe that item poses a threat.

At this point, police have not confirmed whether the gun Holland was holding was loaded or not.

State and Montague police had to close down part of Turnpike Road for several hours as they tried to calm the situation.

As police responded to the home, residents throughout the area were warned to stay inside.

Holland will be arraigned Thursday morning in Greenfield District Court.

Chief Dodge praised the work of all law enforcement involved that brought the standoff to a peaceful end.

"Everybody worked well together, the subject was safe in the end, nobody was harmed. It was just a great collaborative effort on all agencies' parts," Dodge said.
