MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Cell phone service for $4 a month

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

How much do you pay for your cell phone plan every month? $80, $90, even $100? One Henrico couple figured out a way to pay about $4 a month.

Brad and Laura Barrett are CPA's, so you know they watch their money carefully.

"It was shocking. It was significant. It was probably at that point $50 a month," said Brad about how much it cost when he started paying his phone bill in 2003.

Since then, rates have gone up. Brad doesn't use his phone a lot, so he found a way to outsmart the system. He went with T-Mobile's prepaid plan.

"If you put $100 on the very first time, you became what's known as a gold member," said Brad.

That's 1000 minutes that don't expire for one full calendar year. Right before his year is up, he buys the smallest increment of minutes for $10.

"It then takes all your unused minutes, and the new minutes you just purchased, which is about 100 for that $10, and it rolls them an additional one calendar year."

The next year, he buys another $10 of minutes.

"That's three years for $120," said Brad.

The Barretts have done this for eight years..the monthly cost averages $4. This plan works for people who aren't constantly on their phones, and it's not for smartphones, but Brad has a solution for that, too: an iPod touch.

"The Freedom Pop. It's essentially a little sleeve that attaches to the iPod touch, and it's a wireless hotspot, and it gives you 500 megabytes of data free per month, forever."

The iPod was $200, the Freedom Pop was $99. The only thing it doesn't do is make calls - and the Barretts already have that covered inexpensively.

"That is $300 one time, and if we have it for 10 years, that's 120 months - $2 and change a month."

The Barretts run a website called Richmond Savers, where they detail exactly how they work this deal as well as dozens of others that can save you money. Click here to visit their website: http://richmondsavers.com
