JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Fifty years ago, American soldiers were half a world away, locked in battle in Vietnam.
Veterans will be honored Friday and Saturday for their service and sacrifice. A 24-hour vigil will honor Vietnam veterans on Friday, beginning at 11 a.m.
The Veterans Day Parade will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. on Cherry St. and eventually make its way to the Craighead County Courthouse. Participation in the Saturday parade has dwindled in the past few years.
Parade Co-Chair, Marvin Jumper, hopes this year will be different and more people will salute our veterans. "We were talking about it the other day and somebody suggested that it's been 50 years, I think we need to honor the Vietnam Veterans this year. We've already honored the World War II vets in the past and Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. So, we're honoring the Vietnam Veterans this year."
On Saturday evening, veterans and people from the community will be at the Military Ball at the SBRMC Auditorium around 6 p.m. The Military Ball will honor all veterans of all services.
