SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - After nearly 20 years in the making, the new Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital in Surf City is finally complete.

Thursday, WECT was there as more than a dozen sea turtles moved into their temporary home for rehab. It cost nearly $2,000,000, and according to Executive Director Jean Beasley, none of that was taxpayer money.

It's larger than the old facility, and it will allow volunteers to X-ray the turtles. Beasley believes it will also be a tourist destination.

"We have a chance to educate those visitors about the ocean, about other marine animals, as well as sea turtles," Beasley said.

There's not a set date when the public can visit the new hospital. They hope it will be open before the spring.
