WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- The City of Wilmington is thinking of purchasing land to construct a new park in downtown Wilmington.

The land is located in the same area that the city looked at for a possible baseball stadium. According to a press release from the city, the land is owned by Riverfront Holdings II, LLC.

The release said that the purchase is not final yet, but the park would be between six and seven acres big with an estimated purchase price of between $3.5 and $4 million.

Malissa Talbert, Communications Manager with the City of Wilmington, said the city needs to buy land while it is available.

"If we do want to acquire property, yes it is a considerable expense, but there's virtually almost none left," explained Talbert.

She also said the park will fit in well with the structures that are already in-place downtown.

"With the performing arts center, with the convention center, with the parking decks, with PPD, we've already seen a lot of development there," said Talbert.  "We think this could spur even more (development) and complement other developments that are planned in that area right now."

The manager said this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the city.

"We really have to take a good look at that when those opportunities do arise because we know that for the long-term, it's certainly something that would serve the city well."
