POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) – Police have arrested a 17 year old in connection to a strong arm robbery that occurred earlier this month.

The man police suspect is Marquis Wiggins of Poplar Bluff. Police arrested him on Nov. 14 in the Poplar Bluff Senior High School parking lot. Police do not believe he attends the school.

During an interview with police, Wiggins told officers he did try to steal merchandise from Wal-Mart and struck an employee before leaving the store, according to Captain David Sutton with the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Wiggins was charged with second degree robbery and third degree assault. He is now in the Butler County Jail.

Wal-Mart employees told police another employee approached a shoplifter who was exiting the store on Nov. 6. When the employee spoke to the suspect, Sutton said the suspect hit the employee and pushed him to the ground. The employee suffered injuries to his head and foot.

The suspect dropped the stolen item. But after looking at surveillance video, a woman bystander picked up the stolen merchandise and left the store, according to Sutton.

The suspects were not considered to be working together.

The woman suspect was located by police and interviewed a couple of days after the incident. It is not known if she will be charged.
