JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – St. Bernards Medical Center held an event Friday in honor of National Alzheimer's Awareness Month.

The St. Bernards Health and Wellness Center in Jonesboro hosted a roomful of people for a ‘lunch and learn' event focused on this prevalent disease.

The event delved into topics related to Alzheimer's, a disease that affects more and more people as the population ages.

Brian Rega, the director of senior services for housing, said he wanted to touch on a few topics that he hoped would stick with people when they left.

"We're trying to get people to understand the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia," Rega said. "We'll talk about maybe some risk factors. We're going to talk about a little bit of genetics. We're going to talk about real world situations of what they might be experiencing."

St. Bernards holds ‘lunch and learn' events on various medical topics once a month. In December the hospital plans to educate people on healthy food options for the holidays.
