Local girl scouts earn badges for community service

HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) - Local Girl Scout troops got a chance to earn up to six badges Saturday at their community service event at Parker Homestead in Harrisburg.

This is the first year troops from all over Region 8 came together for this event. There were troops from Harrisburg, Paragould, Weiner, and Jackson County there.

The girls picked up trash and had their annual cornmeal grinding for local food pantries.

Angela Swanner is the Daisy Girl Scout leader for troop 3117, and said that this a great way to meet other troops in the area. "What's it really about is teaching the girls that yes they are individual troops, but that they are a part of a bigger thing and a bigger organization," said Swanner.

The girls also learned first aid and fire safety from local fire and ambulance crews.
