Toddler safe after potential hostage situation

(WMC-TV) - A 2-year-old girl is safe and a man in police custody after potentially being involved in a hostage situation.

Mississippi law enforcement began searching for the toddler Sunday morning.

Originally, officials received calls of a child being held hostage at the Laurel Park Apartments in Walls, Mississippi.

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office, TACT unit, and the Walls Police Department all responded to the scene.

The Walls Police Department originally contacted the Sheriff's Department and told officials of the potential situation.

Officials swarmed the building.

The man turned himself in at the police station with the girl.

The man in custody is Cassidy Thomas, 26.

The mother of the child believed Thomas may have been inside with her daughter.

The door was locked and bolted shot.

He was not found inside his apartment.

Police Chief Reginald Harris confirmed Thomas is facing domestic violence assault and disturbance of family charges.

According to police, previously Thomas tried to commit suicide twice.

They were able to successfully get him on the phone and he did have the child, confirmed officials.

Thomas is being processed and will be taken to the DeSoto County Detention Center.

The girl is now safely with her mother.
