Springfield police searching for homicide suspect

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police are investigating a murder that occurred in the city's Forest Park neighborhood Sunday night.

This is the 17th murder of the year in Springfield.

The suspect who shot and killed William Serrano, 34, is the ex-boyfriend of Serrano's girlfriend.

Now police are asking for the public's help with finding the suspect, Julio Leiva, 25, of Springfield.

Police said Leiva is their main suspect in a homicide that occurred at a Grenada Terrace home.

"Officers responded and we were met by a victim who was shot several times," said Springfield Officer Charles Youmans.

That victim was Serrano.

According to police, Leiva, Serrano and the unidentified girlfriend were hanging out on the porch with friends when something went wrong.

Police said Leiva left the house and later returned with a gun. He then allegedly robbed Serrano and shot him seven times.

Serrano was rushed to Baystate Medical Center where he died early this morning.

Youmans said police are trying to figure out what made Leiva snap.

"Everything's still under investigation with what's going on and why it happened this way," said Youmans.

Leiva has addresses located in both Springfield and Framingham.

Youmans said the department is looking to see if Leiva has a criminal history here in the city.

"We're looking into it right now - his background and things we're looking into that," explained Youmans.

Anyone with information on Leiva's location is asked to contact police.

"Call text-a-tip or you can get a hold of the detective bureau," said Youmans.

The detective bureau at police headquarters can be reached at 413-787-6355.

Those who wish to remain anonymous, can text "SOLVE" to 274-637 on their cell phones.
