Gulfport church helping with typhoon recovery mission

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

First Baptist Church on Cowan-Lorraine Road in Gulfport has been supporting the Philippine Gospel Commission ever since a church member moved there to start a ministry. Brandon Pike, who is a friend of the family, said when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, he immediately thought of the Macintosh family.

"The first thing we thought about was Tom and Evelyn and his family's safety. I mean, they are friends of ours. They are members of First Baptist, it's their home church when they are state side. So, clearly, we were concerned for their well being," said Pike.

Tom and Evelyn Macintosh were members of First Baptist Gulfport many years ago. They have since moved to the Philippines and started a ministry. Senior Pastor of the church, Jimmy Stewart, said he visits their website regularly to stay updated on the great work they are doing.

"Months ago, there was some serious flooding in the Philippines. He got involved in helping people rebuild, so he posted pictures for that and made people aware of how they could help with donations for materials and that kind of thing," said Pastor Stewart.

Since the typhoon hit, both Pastor Stewart and Brandon Pike have been keeping up with the Macintoshs through Facebook. They see just how badly they need help.

"The only way you can get to some of these affected areas is by sea, so they're literally going to have to rent a boat and then procure supplies and make their way into some of these remote areas and try to address the needs in villages that are so far off. It may take, who knows how long to get to them," said Pike.

The church has a goal of sending around $5,000 to help the Philippine Gospel Commission. If you would like to help you can visit: http://www.pgcfoundation.org/
