CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Thursday afternoon 17-year-old Sequoia McKinnon was denied bond on a murder charge. McKinnon was also given a bond of $100,000 for the possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

According to the Charleston Police Department, McKinnon surrendered to police Wednesday night at police headquarters on Lockwood Boulevard in downtown Charleston.

Family of murder victim endure 2nd day of bond court hearings

Brittany Barr, the mother of the murder victim's child said, "Well, I'm hurt for the simple fact because my child don't have her daddy."

Police say Tuesday just before 4p.m., 22-year-old Rhakym Capers was shot near the baseball dugout at Martin Park off of America and Jackson Street in downtown Charleston.

Barr says she is dreading the day she has to tell their daughter about the murder.

"When she asks me questions, it's going to hurt me. I just wish this was all a dream," said Barr.

Over the past couple of days the family of Capers had to face reality in bond court hearings for the two teenagers charged in the murder.

Jazmyn Olds, Capers' girlfriend said, "I just got so many different emotions going through my mind, I don't know. I don't know what to say, I don't know how to feel. I don't know."

The other suspect, Kareem McPherson was denied bond on a murder charge Wednesday after being caught shortly after the shooting by police in what witnesses singled out as the get-a-way car.

The judge also issued McPherson a $25,000 bond for the charge of failure to stop for blue lights.

The judge says the next court hearing for the two teenagers will be February 21st.

Mother, community seek change following fatal shooting

The mother of Capers is in mourning after losing a second son this year to violence.

In the latest shooting, her youngest son, Rhakym Capers, was shot and later died at MUSC.

Wednesday outside of bond court, Capers' mother said, "My only two children I ever had. Y'all killed them like dirty dogs in the street."

Capers' mother says her first son was murdered 8 months ago.

"This is no justice for me. I need more justice for me and my family. Closure or whatever you want to call it. So North Charleston Police Department, city, all of you, get on your jobs because I can't help you and I can't solve the case," said Capers' mother.

A Charleston city councilman is now asking for his community to step up and help guide the younger generation.

Councilman Robert Mitchell represents District 4 in downtown Charleston. He says crime has gone down in the area of America Street, but says this situation makes it clear; work still needs to be done in his district.

Mitchell says he can't do it alone, but community members and local churches could help.

"We have to educate our young people that there's a better way. There's a better way than going committing crime and that's what is happening here, is a lot of crime being committed. We as parents have to get involved big time right now in this community," says Councilman Mitchell.

According to the coroner's office, Capers died from a gunshot wound.

Woman tired to help murder victim after he was shot

Anetria Evans, who was babysitting a friend's kids at a nearby home, says she heard the gunshots and rushed to the victim's side to attempt to give aid.

"I ran over there and told someone to call 911," Evans said. "When I arrived over there, I said, hang on man, hang on.'"

Evans said she checked for a pulse, which she said was weak, stayed with the victim until help could arrive and prayed. Evans says the victim was shot in the head and appeared to be in his teens.

"I feel really bad because it's like today, kids seem not to have the value of life," said Evans who said she could relate to the incident since her nephew had been killed some time ago."I wish I could've done more, but it wasn't in my hands."

According to Evans, many kids play in the area and could've been struck by the bullet.

"This kind of stuff gotta stop because there are too many kids be out here playing football, and it's real bad."

An incident report states the victim, who was found laying face down at the scene, was transported to MUSC.
