JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - They're fast talkers and they're looking for fast money. The Craighead County Sheriff's Department is warning of a fraudulent business they believe could be looking for victims in the area.

One Craighead County family paid out thousands of dollars after they were led to believe the company just needed to get rid of leftover asphalt.

It's the kind of fraud case the Craighead County Sheriff's Department says they've dealt with for years and the latest one, like others in the past, usually starts out the same way.

"We were just finishing this job up down the road and so we can offer you a better deal because it's just left over," Investigator Justin Rolland with the Craighead County Sheriff's Department explained.

A company offering discounted or free services just to help them out.

The sheriff's department hasn't worked a similar case for awhile but this past week, it cost one Region 8 man nearly $5,000.

The fraud victim did not wish to speak on camera but told Region 8 News that a man, who called himself Jason, stopped by his home while he was outside and asked if he could dump leftover asphalt on his property.

The job they did however, was just a few inches of black chat spread out in the man's driveway.

"The asphalt is not to what we could consider spec," Rolland said.

Then, the crew, who claimed they were with "Asphalt Services" out of Little Rock presented the man with an invoice with no information other than the services performed and the cost: $4,700.

"They basically strong arm these citizens into paying a hefty bill."

They did give the man a business card, with a phone number that Region 8 called, but it went straight to voice mail. The business address on the card shows up as a home in a Little Rock neighborhood.

Rolland warns these guys will be fast talkers.

"They're persistent, they're pressuring," he said. "Once it gets to that point, that's a perfect opportunity for the homeowner to back up."

Rolland said tell them you are suspicious and let them know you're calling police.

"Their reaction from that point on will let the homeowner know if they're a legitimate business or not."

The man who called himself "Jason" had the victim make the check out to a "Jessie Coletti". According to the incident report filed by the Craighead County Sheriff's Department, the vehicle he was driving was a red dump truck with a white bed that looked as if it once had "Davis" spelled out on the side.

If you believe you were recently a victim of this same fraud or have information on the case, call your local law enforcement agency.
