A-State Women's Basketball falls to UT Martin 75-66
From Arkansas State University
Redshirt sophomore Aundrea Gamble scored 30 points but UT-Martin hit a Convocation Center record 12, 3-pointers as the Red Wolves suffered their first loss of the season in a 75-66 defeat to the Skyhawks.
The Red Wolves (2-1) came into the contest looking for its first 3-0 start since the 2003-04 season and looked to take down a UT-Martin squad that has been to four straight postseason tournaments. However, the Skyhawks (3-1) took command early on and built a 52-27 lead with 17:05 to go in the game.
"I was very disappointed in the first half," A-State head coach Brian Boyer said. "It all started on the offensive end and I was just shocked at how poorly we executed on the offensive end of the floor. My whole message to this team has been that you can't throw away offensive possessions and we did that time after time in the first half."
A-State began to chip away at the Skyhawks lead and pulled within 63-49 with 10 minutes remaining. The Red Wolves rode the hot hand of Gamble who collected 18 of her points in the second half. She scored 11 points over a nine minute span and helped A-State get within 63-51 with 8:54 to go.
Hanna Qedan and Jane Morrill hit back-to-back 3-pointers with close the gap to 69-63 with 2:58 but A-State could not get any closer as the Skyhakws held on for the victory.
The Red Wolves trailed 45-27 at halftime as UT Martin blistered the nets by knocking down 10-of-18 shots from beyond the arc for 55 percent and made 9-of-10 shots from the free throw line (90 percent). A-State struggled in the first 20 minutes as the Red Wolves were limited 33.3 percent (10-30) shooting. The Red Wolves were 4-of-7 at the free throw line and made 3-of-11 shots from beyond the arc. A-State kept the UT Martin lead to single digits for almost 11 minutes into the game before the Skyhawks pushed the lead to double digits and lead by as many as 23 with a 1:07 to go in the first half.
UT Martin finished the night 12-of-28 from beyond the arc, but hit just two 3-pointers in the second half. The Skyhawks' 12 ‘3s' broke the Convocation Center record for most 3-pointers in a game by an A-State opponent. The record previously belonged to Murray State who made 11 triples in game in 2003.
Gamble scored 30 points in a game for the second time this season on 11-of-20 shooting, while also going 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Morrill finished the night with 11 points and seven rebounds while Qedan has reached double-digit scoring with 10 points. Sophomore Jalen O'Bannon grabbed nine boards.
The Skyhawks outrebounded A-State 46-34 during the game and held a 14-9 advantage on the offensive glass. UT Martin also scored 14 second chance points on the night, while the Red Wolves finished with just four.
A-State returns to action Friday, Nov. 22 against Kent State at the Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
