Police offer tips for holiday shoppers

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Craighead County Sheriff Marty Boyd says they've received a number of calls lately.

Region 8 residents want to know what they can do to keep themselves safe as the venture out to get their holiday shopping done. Boyd says one the number one thing is to be alert.

"Be aware of your surroundings," said Boyd.  "Keep watching, seeing if anyone is hanging around that just doesn't look right that could be suspicious or something like that.  At night, be sure and park in a well light area."

Boyd also offered these suggestions:

  • Keep your thumb poised on your car alarm in case you need to draw attention to yourself.
  • Pepper spray is a good deterrent, but be sure you know how to use it.
  • Keep your purse and shopping bags locked in the truck of your car and out of sight.
  • Park in a well lit area at night
  • Check the back seat of your car before you get in to make sure no one's there.
