DALLAS, TX (KLTV) -

People in Dallas are notably reflective today. The ceremony, was very simple and somber, but the mayor's remarks made it clear that this city is still working and hoping to prove to itself and the rest of the country that the Dallas of 1963 and the Dallas of today are two very different places.

At 12:30 p.m., bells rang throughout Dallas. Their chimes marked the moment President Kennedy was shot. The shooting happened just feet away from where thousands gathered to honor his memory.

The United States Naval Academy Glee Club sang for one of their own - President Kennedy was a Navy lieutenant - and a banner with Kennedy's image was raised high for all to see. It stretched across the very road Kennedy traveled in his final moments.

Mayor Mike Rawlings reminded the city of Dallas of the turmoil they faced on this day in 1963.

"Hope and hatred collided right here in Dallas. We watched the nightmarish reality that in our front yard, our president had been taken from us, taken from his family, taken from the world," said Rawlings.

The world that was forever changed, but some say the city of Dallas changed the most.

There's no denying that Dallas was scorned across the nation that day. But today, the city came together and paid tribute to Kennedy's visions and dreams for this nation.
