USDA Rural Development ready to help tornado victims

CHAMPAIGN, IL (KFVS) -

USDA Rural Development has announced it is ready to assist rural communities who suffered losses from the severe storms and tornadoes that struck Illinois this month.

According to USDA Rural Development, their housing programs can provide up to $20,000 in low interest loans for home repairs.

The funds be used to help families whose primary residences were damaged or destroyed as the direct result of the storms. Residents with damaged homes should first contact their insurance agent.

Rural Development provides loans for home repairs at one percent interest for up to 20 years for those who meet income criteria. And Rural Development says for residents purchasing or building a new home, they can assist with loans for homeowners to obtain mortgages with no down payment.

Funding is also available for communities with a population up to 10,000 which have experienced a significant decline in quantity and quality of water.

More information on USDA Rural Development funding opportunities and contact information for the Illinois offices is available on the web at www.rurdev.usda.gov/il.
