Local woman pleads guilty to million dollar Medicare fraud

JACKSON, TN (KAIT)—A Region 8 woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than a million dollars from Medicare and Medicaid.

Rebecca Christain, 57, of Mountain Home pleaded guilty on November 20 to one count of health care fraud and one count of money laundering.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Christain was the owner of Sleep Analysts, Inc. and a subsidiary company, Pulmonary Solutions, which had offices throughout western Tennessee.

Court records revealed Christain devised a scheme to defraud the Medicare program by hiring unlicensed workers and then instructing them to falsify records.

She was also accused of double- and even triple-billing patients for both physical and respiratory therapy, even though investigators say she never employed physical therapists.

In total, Christain submitted more than $1 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on February 20, 2014, in Jackson, TN.
