NEW ORLEANS (SunBeltSports.org) - The Arkansas State women's basketball enjoyed a 2-1 week as the Red Wolves picked up victories over Kent State and a historic victory against Louisiana Tech to move to 4-1 on the year before embarking on an international trip to Cancun over the Thanksgiving holiday.
A-State began the week on a sour note, dropping a 75-66 contest to UT-Martin at home. Arkansas State trailed but double-digits at halftime, but made a fierce comeback and cut the lead to six in the final minutes. The Red Wolves captured a historic victory over Louisiana Tech Monday night in Ruston, La. The Red Wolves came into the game having lost 29 straight to the Lady Techsters, but jumped out to an early lead thanks a career night from junior Hanna Qedan who had a career-high 26 points.
Gamble, this week's women's basketball player of the week, averaged 22.3 points per contest on the week and has the 16th best field goal percentage in the nation.
WKU improved to 4-1 on the season thanks to wins over Southeast Missouri State and Northern Kentucky last week. The Lady Toppers have won three consecutive and four of their opening five games.
Their lone blemish was a setback to SEC power Vanderbilt. This week the Lady Toppers will host fourth-ranked Louisville and Morehead State after a brief two-game road trip.
UALR pulled even in the standings with a 68-63 overtime win against Memphis. The Trojans are now 2-2 on the young season as they look to return to their championship form over the next few weeks. The Trojans face Oral Roberts after the Thanksgiving break.
Several teams will be competing in tournaments over the holiday as A-State heads to Cancun and will take on No. 11 North Carolina, Illinois and Arizona State in successive days. South Alabama heads to Boulder, Colo. for the University of Colorado Tournament. They will take on the No. 14 Buffaloes on Friday, Nov. 29 at 8:30 p.m. (CT).
Georgia State is hosting its own tournament with Jacksonville State and Georgia joining the Panthers in Atlanta. GSU faces Jacksonville State on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
