STEELE, MO (KAIT)--A Region 8 man is being held without bond after police say he pistol whipped a man then beat him with a hammer.

On Monday night Steele police and Pemiscot County sheriff's deputies were called to a home on North Walnut Street in Steele, MO, regarding a man being held hostage.

When officers arrived they saw William Erwin, 31, of Blytheville walking away from the home and took him into custody.

Inside the house, officers found a 48-year-old man "bleeding profusely," according Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield.

The victim was taken to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital with a severe head injury.

Investigators say Erwin went to the victim's home and demanded money.  He then began pistol whipping the man, Stanfield said.

At one point during the attack, Stanfield said Erwin dropped the handgun and picked up a claw hammer and continued beating the man.

Officers recovered the gun and the hammer at the scene.

Erwin was taken to the Steele Police Department where Chief Stanfield said Erwin confessed to the attack.

Erwin is currently being held without bond at the Pemiscot County Jail, charged with assault first degree-serious physical injury and armed criminal action.
