Sheriff: Child's foot blown off after stepping on explosive

YELLVILLE, AR (KAIT)--Sheriff's investigators say a young child's foot was blown off when it stepped on an explosive device in a neighbor's yard.

The child, who has not been identified, was taken to Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home then flown to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock with serious injuries.

According to Marion County sheriff's investigators, the child was walking through the woods Tuesday afternoon when it stepped on a plastic bag containing an "exploding target."

A small amount of the explosive powders, which can be purchased at various retail stores, was left in a sandwich bag on a cinder block.

The child either stepped or stomped on the bag, investigators say, causing it to explode.

The child's right foot was seriously injured.  The left foot and leg also sustained injuries from shrapnel.

The sheriff's office stresses this was not a booby trap nor was it a random explosive in the woods.  Investigators say there is no need for worry about other devices that could harm someone else.

The incident is still under investigation.
