A-State's Melvin Johnson III honored by College Sports Madness

Arkansas State University's Melvin Johnson III has been chosen as this week's (Dec. 2) College Sports Madness Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his exceptional performance in the Red Wolves' victory at Lamar this last Saturday (Nov. 30) per an announcement made this Monday (Dec. 2).

Johnson III poured in both a game-high and season-best 26 points in A-State's 95-89 non-conference win over Lamar last Saturday (Nov. 30) evening at LU's Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.  The 6-6 senior guard connected on eight-of-nine three-point field goal attempts, including make his first eight treys, in 27 minutes of action.  He finished the contest shooting 9-12 from the floor while grabbing two rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists.

This season, Johnson III leads the Red Wolves in scoring with a 19.7 points per game average and has totaled a squad-most 118 points.  A starter in all six contests, Johnson III is tops among A-State players with 26 three-point field goals in 40 attempts for 65.0 percent efficiency.  The Dallas, Texas native is averaging a team third-most 3.7 rebounds to go with five assists and three steals in an average of 26.0 minutes per outing (156 minutes).  Johnson III has presently attained double-figure scoring in all six A-State games to date, which includes three 20-point or more outings.

Johnson III, a transfer from Texas-San Antonio, currently leads the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in three-point field goals made (4.3 avg.) and three-point field-goalpercentage (65.0%) while ranking sixth in scoring (19.7 ppg.).

Nationally, Johnson III presently is second in both three-point field goals per game (4.33 avg.) and three-point field goal percentage (65.0%) while ranking 12th in three-point field goals made (26), 54th in field goal percentage (58.2%), 63rd in points per game (19.7 ppg.), and 206th in total points (118 pts.).
