MADISON COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – A mother is facing charges after she allegedly left her children in a bedroom with drugs and a corpse.

According to Richmond police, around 8:30 a.m. on November 30 officers responded to a home in Dixie Plaza on a report a 24-year-old man had overdosed.

When officers arrived they found Kyle Willis was unresponsive on a bedroom floor.

Officers said a substance they suspected to be crack-cocaine and drug paraphernalia were in plain view on a bedside table in the home.

Kristen Johnson, 22, who was at the home told police she was Willis' girlfriend.

When officers searched Johnson they found a glass pipe in her purse and a syringe with liquid residue in one of her boots.

Police said Johnson's 4-year-old and 6-year-old children were sleeping in the bedroom with Willis' body, the drugs and drug paraphernalia.

A Child Protective Service representative was called to the home and placed the children in protective custody.

Johnson was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance, wanton endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.
