BROOKPORT, IL (KFVS) -

With winter weather threatening parts of the Heartland, no one is more vulnerable than the folks in Brookport, Ill.

The efforts to get the town cleaned up have stalled due to the fast approaching storm. So many homes in Brookport have just a tarp and a few boards covering their roof, separating them from the outside.

One family said they plan on riding out the nasty weather, but many families have already left the area, according to city leaders.

Volunteers working to clean up Brookport have been going non-stop for weeks now, but with the winter storm being thrown into the mix, it's going to cause some delays. IDOT trucks and engineers pulled out of Brookport Wednesday due to the storm. Their focus has moved to the highways in order to get them salted and cleared when the snow and sleet mixture starts to fall.

They've asked volunteers to make piles along the curb so that on Tuesday, when they come back, the trucks can load those debris piles and haul them away. With the big trucks out of town, it doesn't mean crews have stopped all work. They're just asking volunteers wanting to still help out to be cautious for the next few days.

"We are just asking people to use a lot of common sense, you know if it's bad, stay home," said Jeff Bealmer, volunteer coordinator. "This is a long term disaster relief project and hopefully next Tuesday if things get shut down, we can rev it up next Tuesday and then hope for a big push."

Interim Mayor Tom Saunders said anyone who was forced to relocate because of the condition of their home has already done so. This is all prior to Thursday's expected storm.

Because so many people have already left the area, the Mount Sterling Church that has provided meals to volunteers over the last few weeks said they've transferred the majority of their food to neighboring churches with the fear of it going to waste.

Saunders said they're just going to take it day-by-day and hopefully by the start of next week everything will be back to normal.
