Evansville man runs marathon on treadmill for St. Jude's

The St. Jude's Marathon in Memphis was cancelled on Saturday because of the weather, but one Evansville man still managed to cross the finish line.

Bryant Mosbey and his family rearranged their plans. Instead of traveling to Memphis, they traveled to Ultimate Fit in Evansville.

Bryant ran his 26.2 miles on a treadmill, and he did it with a smile on his face and with two special people on his mind.

He dedicated his journey to an angel and a survivor.

"Robert was diagnosed at the age of six months and died at the age of two and a half," Robert Goad said.

"I didn't have a chance to meet my brother, so I've just heard the stories and I always say he's been with me my whole life," Alex Mosbey said.

Robert would be Bryant's brother-in-law. He spent the majority of his young life at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the same place Bryant's former student and cancer survivor, Amber Hardin, received her cancer treatments.

"The last year Robert was alive, my bride and Robert were at St. Jude's for about 265 days. We never received a bill," Goad said.

Which is why Bryant decided to give back to a place that has given both his family and his friends so much.

"It seems like donations have really picked up over the last 28 to 48 hours because of that which is the ultimate thing. Me running comes secondary to what St. Jude is getting," Bryant said.

Bryant's family and friends say he is selfless

"He's quite outstanding," Goad said.

"He used to not run, so for him to go from not running to thinking of running as punishment to doing this, its pretty awesome," Alex said.

Bryant needed to raise $500 to participate in the marathon. He accomplished that, and then some, raising more than $6,000 for St. Jude's.

"He's supporting St. Jude's. We're supporting Bryant," Goad said.

"It's kind of neat, because had I ran there in Memphis, they would have seen me maybe a total of two minutes, three minutes. It's kind of neat they are able to share this experience with me today," Bryant shared.

Bryant's wife tells 14 News that Bryant is planning on running in another marathon for St. Jude's in the spring.

The recent increase in gas prices has people watching their pennies even more, but it is not stopping people from taking trips this Memorial Day weekend.
