Perhaps it was the fact that Alabama's new offensive coordinator was coaching from the sideline. Perhaps it was that screen grab with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter that went viral.

For a while, it looked like the college football world was going to be upended in the first week of play, but it all worked out according to plan in the end.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Bill Battle, the University of Alabama Athletics Director, is keeping mum on Nick Saban's contract extension.

Several sports writers have tweeted about the AD's response to what is likely a constant question: what's going on with Saban?

Ralph D. Russo, an Associated Press sports reporter, tweeted this:

"Alabama AD when asked about Saban contract extension: "we're focused on recruiting and playing Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl." No follow-ups."

Battle apparently made a similar response to Brett McMurphy with ESPN and Dan Wolken with USAToday.

Paul Finebaum and Gil Brandt of NFL.com reported Tuesday night that Saban has been offered a contract extension with a salary of $7 million per year.

The furor over Saban's possible extension coincides with rumors about Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown and his future with the school. There have been other rumors this year that Saban could be heading to Texas but so far they have been unfounded.

Meanwhile, Tide quarterback AJ McCarron told the Associated Press that he thinks Saban will stay in Tuscaloosa but that he also stays out of his coach's business.

Blake Sims was good enough to finish his first start at quarterback for Alabama, getting plenty of help from Amari Cooper, T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry, and the second-ranked Crimson Tide held off West Virginia...
Blake Sims took a seat on the bench next to Jake Coker after leading Alabama to a score and the two chatted for a few minutes before it was time for the offense to go back on the field.
