Suspect caught that walked out of hospital after being shot during Angelina Co. home break in

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

According to Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches, Authorities in Clute, Tx have arrested a man that escaped custody at a Houston hospital after running from a house after being shot by an Angelina County woman.

"Authorities executed a traffic stop and identified Cody Barnhill as a suspect in the car," Sanches said. "We will be transporting him to the Angelina County jail in the morning."

Sanches said that Barnhill walked out of Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston at approximately 2 p.m.

Sanches said Barnhill walked out of the facility wearing nothing but his hospital clothes. The burglary suspect left his other clothes at the hospital.

"He's taking a risk with his health," Sanches said.

Barnhill was shot in the right side of his back, according to Sanches.

Sanches said his deputies were limited on what they could do at Memorial Hermann.

"The hospital staff told our deputies, 'He's in our care, and he can't leave," Sanches said. "When a suspect gets hurt like this, we can't take him to jail unless the hospital clears him."

Angelina County Sheriff's Office deputies had been working on leads in Clute for the past 30 hours, Sanches said. He said evidence they found in Barnhill's hotel room helped them clear three other burglaries. Sanches said they recovered six rifles, one pistol, silver items, collectible coins, two laptop computers, one i-Pad, three Kindles, and two Samsung Galaxy tablets.

The attempted burglary occurred at approximately 3:30 or 4 p.m. Thursday at a residence in the 5800 block of FM 2251. Sanches said the home owner, a woman, was outside feeding her cattle when she went back inside and found that a white male had broken into her home and was trying to steal some of her property.

Sanches said, at this time, the details of what happened are still sketchy. However, the woman somehow grabbed a shotgun from inside her residence and shot the suspect.

The suspect then fled the home and jumped into a white Toyota Corolla with no hubcaps. Sanches said the man was last seen heading south on FM 2251.

Later Thursday night, the ACSO received a 911 call Thursday night that someone at a La Quinta Inn in Clute, Texas was suffering from gunshot wounds.

When officials arrived, they confirmed that it was indeed the suspect from the burglary earlier that day.

According to Sanchez, Barnhill was air lifted to Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston.
