TROY, AL (WSFA) -

A former Troy University football player whom police say confessed to shooting a man to death over the weekend is now free from the Pike County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Dimitri Miles, 21, was arrested and charged with murder and receiving stolen property in connection to the fatal shooting of Marquise McClendon, 26.

Police responded to a call at Trojan Crossing Apartments around 8 a.m. Sunday indicating someone had been shot. When officer arrived, they found McClendon inside an apartment where he'd been shot multiple times. He was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say Miles was the person who called call police about the shooting and say he later confessed to the crime. Miles told investigators the gun he used to shoot McClendon was bought from a friend in Georgia. The gun had been previously reported as stolen.

A search of Miles' residence ended with the recovery of what is believed to be the murder weapon, a Glock 9mm with laser sight.

The search also led to the discovery of marijuana and digital scales for which Miles is also charged with possession of marijuana first degree.

Troy University Athletic Director John Hartwell released a statement in regards to the arrest. It reads:

"First and foremost, anytime there is a loss of life it is a tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family. Dimitri Miles was a walk-on student-athlete on our football team who was academically ineligible to compete in competition this past season, but practiced as a member of the scout team. His association with our football team and the Troy Athletic Department has been terminated as a result of these charges which are associated with an incident that occurred off campus."

According to Herb Reeves, Troy University Dean of Students, Miles has been immediately suspended from Troy University.

Neighbors reported several shots were fired and some of the residents worry for their safety.

"It's really shocking because it's usually pretty quiet over here and it's not even a lot of people that stay in this complex, so it's really something that we all wouldn't expect to happen and it's like it's getting closer to me and it's not really a safe feeling", says Breauna Crayton, a Trojan Crossing resident.
