Last minute Christmas shopping hits local businesses

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - With Christmas exactly one week away, several shoppers are rushing to check off that Christmas list. With fewer days this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the holiday hustle and bustle has gone from a few here and there to people everywhere.

"Everybody has a certain amount of money they are going to spend," said Gearhead Outfitters Owner Ted Herget. "Whether they spend it in 25 days or 15 days, the 15 days makes it a little bit more chaotic for all of us."

Herget said a Saturday in December is one of their busiest of the year, but the winter storm made a huge impact on sales.

"That Saturday was one of the top five days of the year, so we took a beating that day," said Herget.

The lack of sales until this week really affected locally owned businesses. J Christopher Toys Owner, Mary Horne, said shopping local not only helps her business but it keeps the money in the community.

"When you choose to shop locally you're choosing to support a fellow human and your town," said Horne.
