Local woman stabbed, robbed of child's Christmas present

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT)-- A Newport woman is recovering after she was stabbed and robbed of her child's Christmas present.

The 28-year-old woman told police the attack happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday as she was walking from her car to her home on Hout Circle.

The woman said a black man wearing dark clothing approached her and demanded she hand over her shopping bag.

Instead of handing over the bag, which contained a Christmas present for her child, the woman hit the man in the face with her keys, according to an email from Lt. Patrick Weatherford of the Newport Police Department.

The suspect then knocked the woman to the ground and stabbed her in the leg with a large knife, Weatherford said.

The man then grabbed the shopping bag and ran away.

The victim was taken to Harris Hospital where she was treated and released.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is encouraged to call the Newport Police Department at (870) 523-2722.
