ASU officials respond to SACS inquiry

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Officials with Alabama State University are responding to the Southern Accreditation of Colleges and School, or SACS, regarding the agency's inquiry into the university.

Interim President Dr. William Harris says the response is a direct result of the forensic audit that Governor Robert Bentley paid for and ASU agreed to.

"We categorically affirm that there is no problem of integrity at Alabama State University," Harris said.

Harris added that there is nothing in any documents that they've reviewed that would show any financial stake for ASU Board Chair Elton Dean. "There is no evidence to suggest anywhere that anyone has exercised conflict of interest," Harris said."

Harris called part of the Forensic Strategic Solutions, or FSS, audit report, "Some of the sloppiest work I've ever seen in my life."

"There has been nothing in the report that hit remotely at the idea of waste, fraud or corruption. Not one item at all. We followed the money and the money is where it's supposed to be."

Freddie Gallot, ASU's VP of Business and Finance, says ASU hired auditors who examined all contract ASU had that were valued above $7,500.

Harris says ASU officials will meet with Medicaid officials next month to discuss the issues with its contract that were revealed. Judge U.W. Clemon, ASU's attorney says the school provided all documents to forensic auditors

"This has been a year from Hell and some of you may have even been a part of the devil," Harris said.
