BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has completed their second full day investigating the Gate City apartment explosion.

Crews have been busy using an excavator to remove debris from the explosion site. This allowed officials to extract key items in investigation. They say they have removed four appliances from one unit: a stove, a water heater, a furnace and a microwave.

Officials also say they have shipped the 8-foot section of pipe removed from area to their materials lab in Washington, D.C.

Wednesday, lead investigator Ravi Chhatre said this pipe is part of the cast iron-main line that distributes gas throughout the neighborhood to smaller pipes. Investigators want to determine what, if any role, this pipe had in the explosion.

Officials revealed Thursday that this pipe was exposed and shouldn't have been. It was located about 40 feet from the building that exploded.

The NTSB has not definitively said what role natural gas played in this explosion but that they do suspect it played a role.

Friday, two-man team will begin interview portion of the investigation. They would like to know what people saw and smelled the morning of the explosion. They also say that anyone who would like to speak to them is welcome to visit the explosion site at Georgia Road and Joppa Avenue and speak with investigators.

FOX6 News has learned that funeral arrangements have not yet been set for Tyrennis Mabry, 40, the woman killed in the blast. Her fiance, Daryle Brown, remains in critical condition.
