Volunteers prepare for free Christmas Eve dinner

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT)- Volunteers in Greene County met early Saturday morning at the fairgrounds to unload can goods and set up tables for the 3rd Annual Community Christmas dinner.

The dinner will be held on Christmas Eve at noon and last all day. Volunteers are welcoming anyone in the community who is in need of a meal.

"Anytime there is a need, we want to fill it," said event coordinator, Racheale West.

Tis' the season for giving, and this group of volunteers is hoping to give a few hundred people a warm meal on Christmas Eve.

"We just bring all the food in, get it unloaded, get it sorted, get it ready that way we don't have to scramble around and try to find things on Tuesday," West said.

She hopes to get all the small things done before the event.

"We're just going to set up and get everything ready and be ready to kick it off," West said.

This is the third year West has coordinated the Community Christmas Dinner and welcomes anyone who can't afford a meal.

"There is more of a need than what can be filled at some of the organizations," she said. "Our first year we fed 286 people, last year it grew a little bit to 350 so we never know if we are going to get 100 or 300."

Dinner guests can look forward to all of the Christmas fixings.

"Turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn , rolls, desert, then we'll have milk from Turner dairy and sweet tea."

West said they will begin serving at noon and stay until the last person leaves.

"Maybe they can afford their meal for the week but they cant afford that extra Christmas dinner  and so as long as there is a need we just hope to continue to do it takes the entire community for donations, if we don't have donations we cant do it," she said.

West said they are proving transportation the dinner. She asks that people call by Monday to get on the list. That number is 870-335-8624.
