KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities say no rape occurred after a woman told officers she was attacked by a man in downtown Kansas City.

After further investigation, interviewing witnesses and a cooperative suspect, police were able to determine that no crime occurred. Police say it was a false report.

Investigators say the woman admitted to making up the attack while they were interviewing her about the crime a second time.

Previous story:

Police say a woman was walking to church in the middle of the day when a man came out of nowhere and raped her in downtown Kansas City.

Scraps of crime-scene tape still hang at the scene where a woman says a stranger grabbed her, dragged her into a nearby parking garage and shoved her into a rusted, abandoned truck, where he raped her.

The woman is recovering at the hospital while police search for her accused rapist.

Investigators towed the truck off to process it for evidence, looking for links to who did this.

"There's a lot of wolves out here," said Angela Person, who stays at a women's shelter inside the Grand Avenue Temple United Methodist Church, located just around the corner from the crime scene.

Police say the woman was walking to church about 12:45 p.m. Sunday at East Ninth and McGee streets when she was attacked.

"It's not safe out here for women anymore," Person said.

Person plans to talk to the other women in the shelter to make sure they're keeping alert and watching their surroundings.

"I tell the girls, 'If you're going out, go in twos. Make sure somebody is with you so that you can be safe,'" she said.

Person says on a cold night, the women seeking shelter at the church are already vulnerable, and it is frustrating and frightening that they have to worry about someone who might hurt them, too.

"It doesn't help the situation that they're already in," Person said.
