Pregnant woman escapes fire through window

(WMC-TV) - Seven people, two of whom are children, are homeless after fire destroyed their Ridgemont Avenue house around 2 a.m. Monday.

Sharon Butler said that her family, including her husband, pregnant daughter, and two grandchildren, had moved into the house just two months ago.

Butler said that her daughter, Fananda, smelled smoke coming from the kitchen. After waking up the rest of the family, she jumped from a bedroom window with her 3-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter to escape the flames.

"I had to jump out the window with my son on my hip," said Fananda Butler, who is four months pregnant. She hurt her knee during the jump and was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

"By the time I could get from my room to the midpoint past the bathroom into the living room, it was just orange and red fire," she added.

Firefighters say the fire appears to have started in the kitchen, possibly around the stove.

The Butler family says nothing is salvageable. They even lost the truck that was parked in the carport.

"I'm going to save my tears for my happy moments because we don't have room to complain because we alive and everything else that was lost will be made up for," said Fananda.

The family is getting assistance from the American Red Cross and other family members.

If you are interested in helping the Butler family, a fund has been set up at SunTrust Bank.
