City Youth Ministries receives two grants

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - One Region 8 group is getting a technology upgrade to enhance their programs. City Youth Ministries in Jonesboro recently received two grants, one from United Way and another from Rent One's Great Expectations Foundation.

City Youth Ministries Executive Director, Kim Shumpert, said the grant from Rent One helped purchase all new computers.

"Our kids are going to have faster access to online applications to do homework," said Shumpert. "They'll also have faster access to the Internet so that they can research for projects."

The grant money from United Way will allow tutors and staff to give that one on one attention to each student.

"We're going to be able to really hone in on what this individual child needs and give that personalized attention to them, because of those two grants working in conjunction with each other," said Shumpert.

Rent One's Regional Manager, Andy Sanders, said they chose to give City Youth Ministries the money for many reasons.

"Our region gets to choose based on who we think the Great Expectations Foundation stands for," said Sanders. "They help the youth of Jonesboro with education, wellness and fitness so we chose them."

United Way of Northeast Arkansas Executive Director, Nanette Heard, said she's hoping that with the money between them and Rent One, they can help the students succeed even after they've left City Youth.

"We are hoping that more and more kids graduate from high school and then go on to college," said Heard.
