(RNN) - The world marked the beginning of 2014 with fireworks and other celebrations, sending 2013 out with style.

Dubai set a world record for the World's Biggest Pyrotechnics Display, shooting off more than 500,000 fireworks.

Two blasts rocked the southern Russian city of Volgograd earlier this week. One bomb exploded in a train station on Sunday, and another bomb exploded on a trolley bus on Monday. More than 30 were killed, and police have detained dozens.

Actor James Avery, best known for his role as Uncle Phil on '90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, died on Tuesday night. He was 68 years old.
