NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Some quick thinking lead to the arrest of an 18-year-old man accused of second degree kidnapping.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Taylor Balcome, 18, asked his grandfather, Robert Covil, for a ride to pick up a friend in the Castle Hayne area.

When Balcome couldn't find his friend, he became agitated. At that point, Covil told authorities he put his hand on a .9mm pistol he keeps in his vehicle.

Covil told deputies his grandson lunged for the gun and wrestled it way, saying "Papa, you're going where I tell you!"

The sheriff's office said Balcome told his grandfather to drive to Leland, where Covil noticed he was behind a sheriff's cruiser.

According to the sheriff's office, Covil flashed his lights a couple of times, so the deputy fell in behind Covil and pulled over the vehicle.

Balcombe quickly surrendered and was taken into custody. The teen was charged with second degree kidnapping and common law robbery.

Authorities say Covil was not injured and returned home.
