Hope for the Jobless?

Cedric Fowler lost his janitorial job two years ago Cedric Fowler lost his janitorial job two years ago
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Clearing its first hurdle, the Senate got the votes needed to temporarily extend long term unemployment insurance. It's a sign of potential good news for 1.3 million Americans whose benefits expired.

"I collected them for about a year, a year and a half. After that, it was over," said Cedric Fowler, who lost his janitorial job two years ago.

He's one of an estimated 4 million Americans who lost long term unemployment benefits.   "I came close to losing where I stay. With not having work, I didn't really know what I was going to do or how I was going to take care of my children," Fowler said.

Fowler comes to the Goodwill Career center in Albany to search of jobs. He's working on his GED, without that, work is hard to come by.

"I know there is a job out there for me. You have to keep looking but it's really hard," Fowler said.

While President Obama is urging lawmakers in the House to pass the Senate's measure, it will be met with Republican opposition which calls the $6.4 billion temporary extension hurtful to the economy.

Fowler says he hopes an extension will be passed, but if not he urges those who have no benefits coming in not to give up.

"Please don't give up. If you give up, you've given up on life."

It's optimism in a time when many still don't have a job.     Senate Republicans served notice they would attempt to change the legislation so the $6.4 billion cost would not add to deficits - a step that Democrats have so far rejected.
