Howl and Red Wolves Dancers prepare for UCA/UDA College Nationals

From Arkansas State University

Arkansas State's mascot Howl and the Red Wolves Dancers are preparing for their trip to the Universal Cheerleaders Association and Universal Dance Association Nationals at ESPN's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla., that run from Jan. 17-19.

Howl qualified for nationals by sending in a video consisting of community service, crowd involvement, school activities, cheer/dance interaction, and game situations.  Howl will be up against mascots from schools such as Alabama, Auburn, and Oklahoma.  Howl will perform a themed skit that is made up of multiple creative props and has been working hard over the break building and practicing the skit.  This competition will take place Jan. 17 with the awards being announced shortly after all the contestants have completed their performances.

The Red Wolves Dancers are heading back to the national competitive scene by participating in the Division 1A Jazz competition against 20 other schools including Alabama, Colorado, Florida State, and Tennessee.  The preliminaries will be held Jan. 18 with A-State's scheduled time set for 8:45 p.m., and the finals being held Jan. 19.  The team has been busy practicing two-a-days at the Red Wolf Center over break and conducted morning practices during their stay in Mobile, Ala., for the GoDaddy Bowl.

Fans can catch a glimpse of what Howl and the Red Wolves Dancers have been working on Jan. 15 at the Convocation Center.  They will go through a dress rehearsal with Howl performing his skit and the Red Wolves Dancers performing their jazz routine.  Fans will need to enter through the Red Entrance and doors will open at 5 p.m. with the performances beginning at 5:30 p.m.  This event is free to the public, and, once the dress rehearsal concludes, fans will have a chance to send off Howl and the Red Wolves Dancers as they depart for the UCA/UDA College Nationals.

"We are very excited to be heading to Nationals this coming week," Spirit Squads Coordinator and Head Coach Paige Pauley said.  "They have been working so hard to compete at their best ability to put A-State on the map even more at the UCA/UDA College Nationals.  Please come out and support the Red Wolves Dancers and Howl Wednesday, Jan. 15, as they perform their Nationals routines and depart for Orlando.  Howl yes!"

The mascot competition will be aired on ESPN3 and www.watchESPN.com, while the dance preliminaries and finals can be seen live on http://www.varsity.com.  Fans can keep up with the team on their trip through Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/astatespirit), Twitter (@AStateSpirit), and Instagram (@AStateSpirit).
