Expert: Tour Buses Should be Subject to Higher Safety Standards

OCTOBER 18, 2004 - Posted at 7:25 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Experts say more enforcement of bus standards could improve the safety of tourists.  A charter bus carrying 30 people from Chicago to Tunica, Mississippi, crashed in Crittenden County on October 9, killing 14 people.

A spokesman for the United Motorcoach Association says safety needs to be paramount and that the industry will disappear if the public loses faith in its ability to carry passengers safely.  The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says only 13,000 of the 650,000 truck and bus companies the agency covers undergo comprehensive safety reviews each year.  Experts want inspections streamlined.
