SEARCY, AR (KAIT) – A Region 8 man faces battery charges after police say he shot his grandmother then claimed she tried to commit suicide.

Grant Crawford, 24, of Searcy is being held at the White County Law Enforcement Center in lieu of a $50,000 on a felony charge of second degree battery.

Around 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, Searcy police were called to 100-block of Heffner Street in reference to a reported suicide.

Crawford reportedly told his officer his grandmother, 65-year-old Rachel Maples, had shot herself.

During the course of the investigation, officers learned there had been a struggle between Crawford and Maples.

During the struggle, a gun fired and Maples was struck, Chief Jeremy Clark said in a statement to Region 8 News.

Maples was taken to UAMS in Little Rock where she is being treated for a life-threatening injury.
